Dr Thomas Gourlay
Tom Gourlay is a Senior Lecturer in Theology and Religious Education at the Catholic Institute of Western Australia (CIWA).
Tom completed his doctoral work in 2023 at the University of Notre Dame Australia, where he explored the implications of a theologically informed ‘metaphysics of gift’ or ‘relational ontology’ on the activities of teaching and research at Catholic universities. Prior to this, his studies included advanced degrees in theology, education, and the liberal arts.
Before coming to the CIWA Tom served as the National Director of Chaplaincy and Faith Formation, and Lecturer in the School of Philosophy and Theology at the University of Notre Dame Australia, and previously still as a teacher and department head of religious education in Western Australian Catholic schools.
Tom has published widely in scholarly books and in peer-reviewed journals such as Irish Theological Quarterly, New Blackfriars, the Heythrop Journal, and Logos: A Journal of Catholic Thought and Culture, among others. Tom is the president and co-founder of the Christopher Dawson Society for Philosophy and Culture (Inc.), a member of the Academic Network of the International Ratzinger Foundation, and an Associated Scholar for the Hildebrand Project.
Tom and his wife Elizabeth have five children and live in Perth’s southern suburbs.
