An enriching introduction to the Catholic intellectual and spiritual tradition, this course will explore the foundational and complementary principles of faith and reason that operate in our essential human desire to know truth, beauty, and goodness in God. The course will cover the basic foundations of theology: the Trinitarian God we believe in, the mission and life of Jesus Christ as our saviour, the role of Revelation, Scripture and Tradition, how we respond to evil and suffering, the principles of Catholic social thought and the Christian understanding of the human person as made in the image of God. It considers the relationship between theology, philosophy and ethics, exploring the liberal arts tradition as the groundwork for the integration of human knowledge and practice. These themes will be addressed in the context of living the call to holiness in the grace of God, realised in the giving of oneself as gift to the world and each other.
